Further surgery for victim
Family sets up financial help fund
THE victim of a brutal bashing outside a Toowoomba hotel last month has been taken back into surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.
Steve Edmondstone was last night recovering in the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane after an operation to move a metal plate from putting too much pressure on the right side of his brain.
Mr Edmondstone’s sister Mandy Edmondstone told The
Chronicle the plate, inserted two days after he was bashed outside the Wilsonton Hotel on March 16, had moved more than 12mm.
Doctors told her a normal range of movement was about 5mm.
Mr Edmondstone had hoped to return home to Toowoomba yesterday but an early morning CT scan showed blood clots, which had caused dizzy spells and chronic headaches, had not broken down.
“They (had) to drill a bigger hole to relieve the pressure,” Ms Edmondstone said.
“So it’s a bigger operation than last time.”
The surgery yesterday was the third time Mr Edmondstone had been taken into theatre.
He will remain in hospital for at least the next three days until further scans show the blood clot and brain bleed has cleared.
It has also pushed out his recovery time with Mr Edmondstone unable to drive a car for at least a month after he is released from hospital.
It could mean he is out of work for six months, depending on his recovery.
Mr Edmondstone is being supported in hospital in Brisbane by family and friends, and an online fundraiser has been set up to help relieve financial pressures during his recovery.
Police investigations into the assault outside the Wilsonton Hotel are continuing.
