Do a check on your car before you drive

-

BEING out and about on the roads nearly every day, I see so many cars with only one headlight or tail light.

Let’s all take a minute to do a check of our lights, blinkers, tyres, mirrors etc.

Perhaps these things could also be on the list when vehicles are serviced.

ELECTION TIME?

DO WE possibly have a federal election coming soon?

It’s due by next May, but we may well see one sooner if Malcolm thinks he can pull a swifty. That’s if he survives as leader.

There is just so much going on continually in the Liberal background that we don’t know what to expect next and the Libs themselves don’t know who to trust or who might be the next to pull the knife.

Sorry, but Labor isn’t any better.

Shorten is running round in full campaign mode too, promising billions that the country doesn’t have, the same as Turnbull is doing.

Who is going to pay for these and all of the other pie-in-thesky promises we are going to be bombarded with from now till an election occurs?

Yes, you guessed right. You, the taxpayers, will foot the bill for whatever can’t be added to our country’s out-of-control debt.

Where are we really headed? When will our politicians ever learn?

It’s no wonder that no one trusts the major parties and the minor parties have little to offer.

Pauline actually should have handled it better, but blew what she did have, so we have to just wait and see. RAY HARCH, Toowoomba

CONFUSION

THE Kaurna people’s land rights victory in South Australia should be applauded.

However it is interesting that the judgment only backdates their claim over their land near Adelaide back to first contact in South Australia and no mention is made of January 26, 1788.

I wonder why since the “official” political speak is that everything Australian started at Sydney Cove, disregarding Arthur Phillip’s earlier arrival at Botany Bay a few days before.

The same confusion surrounds Queensland Day.

Here we celebrate the commencement of Queensland as the day in 1859 when we officially broke away from New South Wales.

Why do we not celebrate Queensland Day on the day when the penal colony of Moreton Bay was established in 1824?

Or why not the day in 1842 when Moreton Bay was opened up for free settlement?

We celebrate Australia Day on the day the penal colony of New South Wales was established yet we do not celebrate anything to do with Federation in 1901.

Could it be that celebrating federation as Australia Day in early January each year just upsets our politicians’ skiing holidays in the Northern Hemisphere each year? JOHN FRIEND, Toowoomba

BEATTIE

ONCE again, Peter Beattie is not responsible for his stuff ups.

Was I right in hearing, in tonight’s news, that his latest gaff cost us $33 million?

The stuff up he made with the power system is causing us lots of anxiety (think we should call that “stress”; it means more in law) and now we have to pay for another blunder.

When will he ever be responsible for his mistakes and will he ever have to pay for them as we would for ours? RON SMITH, Withcott
