Young swimmers prepare for championships
SWIMMING: Toowoomba Grammar Swimming will take a strong contingent of athletes to this weekend’s Australian Age Swimming Championships.
The talented young swimmers will look to make a splash in Sydney as they vie for positions in various Australian representative squads.
TGS coach Richard McLean believes a number of his swimmers have the potential and skills to perform well at the championships in Sydney from April 21-28.
“This is exactly what we prepare them (the swimmers) for,” McLean said.
“We’ve got a lot of very talented swimmers – some who are ranked among the best in the country.
“I think we’ll see some really good performances out of them.”
Fresh off Commonwealth Games trials, new athlete Isabelle Mason is excited.
Placing 12th in the 200m butterfly games trials, Mason, 16, will take good form into the championships.
“I feel really good. I feel prepared and I’m ready to race,” Mason said.
“We do some broken swims in training – so I can see where I’m going to be at when I race.
“They’ve been really good, faster than what I’ve previously been so I’m looking towards a PB hopefully.”
“A PB would be very good.”
Grammar old boy Dylan Stevens will use the championships, his last as a Grammar swimmer, to showcase his talents ahead of meeting perspective new clubs.
Stevens, who will move to Brisbane after the championships, has set simple goals.
“I’m feeling pretty good in the water at the moment,” Stevens said.
“Goals wise I just want to swim the best I can - hopefully get some PBs.
“It’s kind of an audition for me as I’m looking for a new coach in Brisbane.”
