Red Centre Way, NT
FORMERLY the “Mereenie Loop” (so-called because a part of it travels through the Mereenie Valley), the Red Centre Way stretches across the NT from Alice Springs to Uluru and beyond. Over 1135km, the loop ticks off the territory’s big ticket attractions and showcases its otherworldly landscape that’ll have you gasping in disbelief.
Red desert sands, spinifex and mulga forest, lush valleys, watering holes and towering gorges, all intermix with Aboriginal culture and plenty of wildlife, from roos to wild camels. Kickstart your journey at Australia’s most iconic outback town, Alice Springs. From there witness the unique formation of boulders that is Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), before driving four hours to the deepest gorge in the Red Centre, Kings Canyon, and its “Lost City” plateau.
But the cherry on top for most is the region’s most famous landmark, Uluru.
The iconic red monolith is a go-to for almost every visitor, but to see the giant rock at its most spectacular, witnessing a sunset and sunrise is essential.
