Get the most out of your dishwasher with these tips

-

IF YOU find bending to load a dishwasher tiresome, then Electrolux’s new release will change your attitude about doing the dishes.

Hailed as a world first, the ComfortLift dishwasher has a lifting mechanism that raises the lower basket to a comfortable height.

Stokehouse executive chef and Electrolux ambassador Richard Ousby says even the best dishwasher needs a commonsense approach when you are loading it for optimum performance.

He offers his stacking tips:

DO

Stack smart: Place plates with tougher, dried-on food stains closer to the middle so they get the full force of the spray. Set the right washing cycle:

Dirty dishes will require a longer, hotter and more heavyduty cycle, however this isn’t necessary for every load. Choose a dishwasher with eco and flexible programs to save on energy.

Stack small items on top and large on the bottom: It might sound obvious but next time you catch yourself trying to stuff those final pieces into the machine – take note. You’ll fit more in, receive a better clean and save time if you properly stack in the first place.

Place cutlery handle up: It is safer and means you won’t have dirty hands grabbing at the tops with every wash. Clean your dishwasher regularly: Avoid unpleasant odours by putting your dishwasher through an empty rinse cycle to clear out grease and any lingering food scraps.

DON’T

Stress about rinsing every item: Scrape off excessive food scraps but don’t worry about a thorough pre-rinse – cleaning these stains is the dishwasher’s job. Place plastics and Tupperware on the top shelf: As the water emitted from the dishwasher jets is very hot, it’s best to place them on the top shelf to avoid warping. Place every dirty kitchen appliance into the washer: Some items aren’t designed to survive the rigour of a usual washing cycle. Even wooden utensils can crack and split. Make sure you check if each item is dishwasher-friendly. Face dishes in the same direction: A cycle will have the best result if dishes mimic the shape of the dishwasher’s spray arm. Plates at the front of the machine should face the back and plates at the back should face the front. Overload your dishwasher:

You might think that you’re saving water by cramming many things into a single cycle but you’ll change your tune when most of them come out needing a second clean.
