Lights right move to boost safety

- SUSAN HARTLAND news@thechronicle.com.au

A FRIEND wrote to the council a few years ago very concerned about a certain intersection in Highfields.

With the new high school on O’Brien Rd, students were forced to cross a busy, dog-leg of a mess at Highfields Rd where cars came from so many directions at once it was very unsafe.

She received a reply that basically the intersection was not a priority at the moment.

The good news is that’s changed and something will be done to fix what is a hazardous set-up.

The council intends to put in lights at two Highfields intersections and a roundabout at a third trouble spot.

Residents will no doubt know exactly where these intersections are because they’re problem areas for both drivers and pedestrians.

It can take ages, for example, to turn right from Kratzke Rd into Highfields Rd with the traffic heavier every year as the population expands in the Highfields region.

The intersections of Kratzke, Woolmer and Cawdor Rds are a weird shape with another odd dog leg. So much so that drivers never really know who should go first.

Lights at this intersection, at Kratzke and Highfields Rd and the roundabout on the corner of O’Brien and Reis Rd are all very sensible.

The council should be commended for taking this action.
