‘Classic’ heritage-listed CBD property hits market
ONE of the Toowoomba CBD’s heritage-listed properties has now hit the market.
The Karingal Chambers building, on the intersection of Ruthven and Bell Sts, was listed for sale last month through Ray White Commercial.
The early 20th century structure, designed by Henry James Marks in 1913, entered the Queensland Heritage Register in 1997.
Lead agent Mark Wynhoven highlighted the two-storey property’s frontage onto both Ruthven and Bell Sts, as well as Bank Lane at the rear.
“(This is) a two-level retail and commercial building consisting of ground floor retail and first floor commercial office space,” he wrote in the online listing.
Renowned architect Henry Marks, who is credited with designing several distinctive facades in the Toowoomba CBD, was commissioned to design Karingal Chambers by show businessman and former mayor Charles Rowbotham.
According to the QHR website, the building’s facade is a classical design.
“The building contains some fine interior features, in particular the windows and VJ linings and panels to the western end of the building,” it said.
“The Ruthven Street frontage contributes to streetscape in scale and detail as one of a series of decorative early twentieth century facades on Toowoomba's main street.
“It is an example of the eclectic range of the commercial work of Toowoomba architects, James Marks and Sons.”
