Downlands producing goods in Townsville as St Mary’s lead way at Charters Towers

NETBALL: Downlands College has made a successful start to the Queensland Independen­t Secondary Schools competitio­n, winning all five of their games throughout the first two days of the tournament.

They started with a narrow 17-14 win over St Mary’s College Ipswich, before dominating St Peter Claver College 21-7 and producing a fourthquar­ter burst to down Chanel College 25-18.

In that fixture they trailed by two heading into the last, before running over the top of their Gladstone opponents with a 11-2 final quarter.

Yesterday they kept true to form, escaping past Mount Alvernia College 16-14 and beating St Michael’s College Merrimac 18-11.

St Joseph’s took two wins from their opening three games, with wins over Gilroy Santa Maria College (15-7) and Rockhampto­n Girls Grammar (25-11) and a loss to Marist Emerald (10-7).

They backed it up by smashing Mount St Bernard 29-4 and fighting out a draw with Ryan Catholic College 15-15.

St Ursula’s had a mixed opening day, going down 22-4 to Chanel College before defeating St Mary’s College Ipswich 16-12.

In their final match of the day they suffered a 17-5 loss to Mount Alvernia College.

Yesterday they took the win over St Luke’s Anglican College 17-12, before falling 16-15 to St Peter Claver College.

ST MARY’S TRACKING WELL

RUGBY LEAGUE: St Mary’s College made a winning start to their division one pool C games and topped their pool.

They defeated St Patrick’s College Mackay 20-4 and St Peter Claver College 24-6 on the opening day, and St Teresa’s College yesterday 26-18 to remain undefeated.

They were due to play Aquinas College in the shield quarter finals late yesterday afternoon.

St Joseph’s College didn’t have the best of starts, dropping their opening game to Faith Lutheran College 14-0, before bouncing back to take down Blackheath and Thornburgh College 16-6.

Yesterday they were defeated 34-0 by St Thomas More College to finish third in division two pool D, before going down 32-6 to St Columban’s College in the bowl quarter finals.
