NEW DATA has revealed the Darling Downs’ top 10 baby names for 2017.

Georgia was the top girl name for a newborn in Toowoomba and the Darling Downs in 2017, while Oliver was the most popular name for a boy.

Oliver was also the most popular name for a boy across Queensland, while Charlotte was the most popular name for a girl. It was the fourth most popular name for a girl in Toowoomba.

Dalby mother Dannielle Thompson gave birth to a boy on July 2 and decided to name him Oliver.

“I chose Oliver as I think it’s a strong name,” she said.

“I love Ollie as a nickname, so while he is little he can be Ollie, but Oliver is such a smart name for when he’s older.”

Ms Thompson, who has three other children, said she had her heart set on the name for a number of years.

“I’ve always wanted it and have finally got it,” she said.

“I was a little bit surprised (to hear it’s popular) as it’s an old school-type name that you don’t hear much any more,” she said.

“It all seems to be crazy and misspelt names these days.”

Sophie, Olivia and Charlotte are the only three girls’ names on the list that were in the top 10 a decade ago. Names such as Ella, Mia, Isabella, Emily, Chloe, Hayley and Jessica are no longer popular.

William is the only boy’s name to remain popular a decade later, with names such as Lachlan, Riley, Jack, Charlie, Cooper, Samuel, Noah, Jacob and Nicholas no longer popular.

Ms Thompson said Oliver was enjoying his first few weeks out in the world.

“He’s a good baby, he eats a lot and doesn’t cry much,” she said.
