A NEW arts space has opened in the Toowoomba City giving nationally and internationally renowned artists a revamped venue to exhibit their works.

The city’s thriving art community helped launched the Alexandra Lawson Gallery on Friday night with 10 artists exhibiting their works in the renovated 19 Goggs St venue.

Once owned by local recording and sound icon Bernie Snep, who died in 2017, the gallery underwent renovations in March ahead of its anticipated opening.

Gallery owner Alexandra Lawson said the first exhibit, which runs through to September 7, included works from 10 artists including Dan Elborne, local talents Tarn McLean, Kyle Jenkins, Ian McCallum and David Usher, and internationally exhibited artist Hayley Megan French.

“It was a successful evening and all the artists were very happy,” Ms Lawson said.

Exhibitions will change every five to six weeks, with a new opening to launch the installations.

Ms Lawson said the next show would include a body of works from Dan Elborne who is currently finishing a PhD at the University of Southern Queensland and an artist she said was “one to watch”.

“I’m just excited to continue contributing to the arts in Toowoomba,” she said.

“It’s a really exciting time for arts in Toowoomba.”
