‘These are not victimless crimes’

IT WAS an unsuspecting hole in a wall where police found a Miles man’s porn stash.

A stash, the Toowoomba District Court yesterday heard, that contained thousands of images deemed child exploitation material.

A police raid of his home saw officers uncover four external hard drives wrapped in a t-shirt in the hole.

Daniel John Galvin initially claimed to police the hard drives contained pictures of his family.

What police found, however, were more than 400,000 pornographic images, with 2798 of them containing children.

Almost 600 of those images were child pornography of the most graphic kind.

The court heard how the stash included 73 videos of children aged six to 14.

The Crown prosecutor said Galvin told police he put them in the hole so no one could find them.

Galvin’s barrister Frank Martin said his client had been going through a tough patch in his life when police searched his house.

Mr Martin told the court Galvin had battled drug and gambling addiction and a stint living on the street before ending up in the small western Queensland town of Miles.

“Only about one per cent of those images were child pornography,” he said.

“He got into porn in a big way and had that material for about a year.

“He was having problems with his partner and he became obsessed with downloading pornography.”

The court heard graphic details about the darker contents of the material which included bestiality and torture.

Judge Nicole Kefford sentenced Galvin to 15 months’ jail suspended for two years.

“The images in your case are abhorrent,” she said.

“These are not victimless crimes.”
