Grammar steals win in dramatic fashion

- JASON GIBBS jason.gibbs@thechronicle.com.au

It is the type of moment every player dreams about – the chance to win your side a match. Toowoomba Grammar School student Jake Sargood was given such an opportunity on Saturday. Having just watched a teammate crash over to score a game-levelling try as the siren sounded – Sargood’s sideline conversion attempt would decide his team’s fate. Thankfully Sargood’s aim was true with his kick sealing a 28-26 win over rivals Ipswich Grammar. The conversion capped off a “roller coaster” game for TGS First XV rugby coach David Efanti. “I’m happy with the result – a win is always great,” Efanti said. “But I’m not happy with every aspect of the performance.” Having raced out to an early 14-0 lead, Efanti said his side let Ipwich back into the game. “We made a few basic errors which allowed them back into the game,” he said. “Thankfully we were able to take back control and win it. “We can’t afford to that (make errors) against our opposition though – teams will punish us if we make those errors in the future.”

Despite the errors, Efanti had plenty of praise for his side.

“I thought our pack moved the ball forward really well for us,” he said.

“We controlled the scrum well and our set piece play was good.

“Nick Simpson had a great game at hooker, Ronin Hassall took the ball up well and the whole team showed a real fighting spirit.”

Efanti’s praise wasn’t limited to his team either.

“We (TGS) had a lot of good wins on the weekend,” he said.

“The First XV, Second XV and 16a teams all had wins and so did many other teams.

“That is a great sign for us – it points to how strong the program and staff are here at the school.”

...IT POINTS TO HOW STRONG THE PROGRAM AND STAFF ARE HERE AT THE SCHOOL.
