US college strengthens defender

FOOTBALL: A few years ago Kyle Parish was battling for his place in the senior SWQ Thunder men’s team.

Working through the club’s junior ranks, he was part of the squad but not a regular starter.

This year was different – back home in Toowoomba during the US college summer break – Parish was a regular starter for the Thunder.

“It (US college football) has been a great stepping stone,” Parish said.

“Playing constantly at that higher level has strengthened my game a lot and I’ve been able to use football as a tool to receive a higher education as well.”

Parish, who will play Division Two football with the Long Island University Pioneers this year, encouraged his fellow TGS graduates to be proactive in their college pursuits.

“It’s a great pathway and a fantastic opportunity,” Parish said.

“The one thing I’d say to them is – don’t let anything happen to you – be proactive.

“Work hard and chase your dream.”
