TRAIL BLAZER

THIS WORKWEAR STAPLE IS HAVING ITS TIME IN THE SUN AS A STATEMENT PIECE, ADDING A TOUCH OF SOPHISTICATION TO ANY OUTFIT

- WORDS: AMBER MACPHERSON

With August comes those inescapable gusty winds. You need a jacket that will help you brave the elements day and night, practical enough to keep your outfit protected, but stylish enough to take you from desk to drinks. You need a blazer.

Blazers are enough of a classic to never really go out of fashion, but this year they returned to the runways in a big way.

Fashion weeks in New York and Europe had checked and bright-hued blazers with oversized buttons slinked over shoulders, from the matching shorts and jacket combo to the large tuxedo dress.

Fashion blogger Madison Woolley says she adores the power coat look, a statement piece set off by a simple pair of heels.

“I’m loving the large blazer trend at the moment – both the oversized blazer dress and the matching jacket with shorts set too,” Madison says. “I usually pair these blazer outfits with a thin or basic pair of strappy heels to keep it simple as the blazer is definitely the centre of attention.

“My personal favourite shoes to pair with the trend are single-strap heels or even heels with a perspex strap.”

For an elegant look, opt for a mini or midi dress in a neutral tone with a bright-coloured blazer that falls below the hips – think ruby red, cobalt blue or caramel.

To keep things casual, try a shorter, dark blazer atop jeans or denim cut-offs with a plain white tee.

For a bolder outfit, dare to wear a matching blazer jacket and pants set with a strapless crop top in a different colour, an ensemble seen this month on Bella Hadid on the streets of New York.

Madison has a fashion hack for making your outfit look extra thought-out.

“Matching your chosen accessory colours to the colour of the buttons on the blazer is something I always try to do,” she says. “I feel like this really brings the whole outfit together.”
