Social set to give apprentice ‘nice race’ at tamworth

-

APPRENTICE jockey Reece Jones is a chance to pull off racing’s equivalent of a century on debut when he has his first race ride at Tamworth today.

The 22-year-old hoop is learning the trade under the guidance of astute trainer Rodney Northam at Scone.

“Reece came to me two years ago a young fellow from Sydney who really didn’t know much about horses,’’ Northam said.

“He had never ridden horses but he’s stuck with it and has really improved, especially in the last six months. I think he is going to make a fine jockey.

“He has got a great work ethic. He works very hard in the stables then at night he goes and washes plates in restaurants. He’s a goer.’’

Jones’ ride at Tamworth today is the lightly raced six-yearold mare Social who is making her NSW debut more than a year after she last appeared at the Gold Coast when trained in the Sunshine State.

“Social looks like a nice horse for Reece first-up and he rode her very well in her trial,’’ said Northam.

“She put herself on the speed and if Reece can just keep her balanced, she will run a nice race for him.’’

Social, who lines-up in the Goodwin Kenny Class 2 Handicap (1000m) to end the card, arrived at Northam’s stables having won two of her only three starts.

Both victories were at the Gold Coast including her emphatic 4 1/2-lengths win on debut which she followed up two weeks later with a Class 1 win at the same venue for her former handler Darren Bell.

“Darren is a mate of mine and when he gave training away, he sent me down two horses, Social being one of them,” Northam added. “She has come to me with quite good form and has impressed me since I have had her.”
