Large bushfire burning
Several crews fight rural blaze
FIREFIGHTERS continue to battle a large bushfire in a rural part of the Southern Downs, four days after it began.
At time of print yesterday 13 fire crews were on the scene tackling the fire, burning near Strathyre Road and Nyora Road, Stonehenge.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said it was too early to determine the cause of the fire.
“As it’s an ongoing incident we can’t completely determine a cause.
“We will establish that once it’s dealt with.”
She said fire crews were still working to contain the fire.
Those teams included local crews and rural fire crews from across the Toowoomba and Southern Downs regions.
“It’s not fully contained yet,” she said.
“Crews are working to establish containment lines.
“It’s spotting a bit, with flames jumping ahead of the main fire.”
The spokeswoman said the fire was roughly 2500 acres in size.
Aerial crews have been used several times to monitor the fire.
“The fire is posing no threat to property at this time,” she said.
“We first took the call for the first on November 4 at noon.
“Crews are working on both sides of Nyora Road in an effort to contain the blaze.
“Motorists in the area are asked to use caution and drive to conditions.”
She said smoke may affect Leyburn, Karara and surrounds.
“If affected, residents are advised to close windows and doors,” she said.
“Those suffering from a respiratory condition should keep their medications close by. If residents are concerned their property is under threat they are advised to call 000 immediately.”
