MILNE BAY MUSEUM

IT IS apparent that the Defence Department, for reasons that still appear vague, are determined that the Milne Bay Museum can not continue in its present location.

We are proud of the fact that our own 25th Battalion, with little training, successfully held their section of the Milne Bay defence line and the Japanese were defeated for the first time with considerable associated problems for them.

One thing is absolutely certain that something has to be done to keep this museum going as it is a wonderful part of the history of the Darling Downs.

The Regional Council has had a long look at the setup and location of their operational headquarters in Anzac Ave and has decided, for obvious reasons, to relocate to a modern form in the industrial area of Charlton.

As a result, a considerable number of buildings in Harristown will be surplus to council requirements and no announcement has been made, as far as I am aware, of what will happen to such buildings.

I would like to suggest that a small portion of these buildings be given to the Milne Bay Museum as a permanent location. As far as I know, the buildings are in reasonable condition and work to make it ideal for a museum would be relatively minor. I feel that the Australian Government will be only too willing to provide a grant to help.

However, I will have to admit to having more than a passing interest in saving a few of these buildings as my father was a foreman in the Civil Construction Corp and helped erect these buildings.
