Blue and boy best of mates

Dog brings friendship, hope to young Jack's life

A TINY ball of fur has brought love, companionship and healed the heart of a young boy from Goomburra who was devastated at the loss of his previous dog.

Four-year-old puppy Blue has not left nine-year-old Jack Finger’s side since the moment he snuggled up to “his human” for the very first time.

Two years ago, on the night Jack and his family adopted Blue from the Southern Downs ARK, he spent the whole evening in Jack’s bed.

Mother Nadia said the two shared an inseparable bond.

“They go everywhere together. Jack fell in love with him straight away,” she said.

The strength of Jack and Blue’s bond was tested recently when the two competed in the inaugural K9 Challenge in Toowoomba on November 19.

Joined by a lead, the two ran, bounced and tackled their way through a 5km course with 30 different hurdles.

Coming out the other side covered in mud and panting with happiness, Jack and Blue had a blast.

“They run through mud pits, under barbed wires, crawl through tubes and climb over cars,” Mrs Finger said.

For only-child Jack, who is learning to tackle a range of moods and emotions, Blue is a mate that sticks with him through thick and thin.

“If he is a little bit sad or wants his own space he will go and jump on the trampoline with his dog, if he is a good mood they run down to the creek.

“For him, having dog like that means he is there for him no matter what mood.”

She urged others to consider adopting rescue dogs from Southern Downs ARK.
