POPULAR Mexican chain Zambrero is set to open its first Toowoomba store next year.

Taking to Facebook yesterday, the chain announced it would open a restaurant at Walton Stores in February, though there was no exact opening date mentioned in the post.

“(The) countdown is on,” the post read.

“Zambrero Walton Stores opening February.”

Analysis of the Zambrero Facebook page reveals a number of Toowoomba residents have been asking the chain to open a store in the Garden City for a number of years.

“So bloody excited,” one Facebook user commented in response to the news.

“So glad we are finally getting it,” another said.

The Zambrero store is the latest of several Mexican fast food chains to set up shop in the Garden City.

Guzman y Gomez operates two stores in the city and Burrito Bar also operates a store.

Unlike its competitors, Zambrero is not a normal business. It is also a social enterprise.

Through its Plate4Plate initiative, the company donates a meal (consisting of rice, soy and dehydrated vegetables, fortified with a vitamin mix, specifically designed to supplement the diet of malnourished individuals) to someone in need for every burrito or bowl purchased.

To date the chain has donated about 27.2 million meals to those in need around the world.

It does this by partnering with international hunger relief agency Rise against Hunger and locally with Foodbank.

The chain was founded in Canberra in 2005 by then medical student Dr Sam Price.

Zambrero operates 189 stores around the world, with the majority in Australia.

It also has several stores in Ireland, New Zealand, Thailand and the United States of America.
