SWIMMING: Toowoomba Grammar Swimming Club will make a record-sized splash at this month’s state swimming championships.

Guided by head coach Richard McLean the club will take 50 swimmers to the meet, with many eyeing off gold medals.

McLean said he is expecting good results from all of his swimmers who will compete in individual and relay events.

“It’s all relative. All our swimmers are trying to achieve different results,” he said.

“What they will achieve depends on the effort they have put in at training and their preparation.

“One thing we feel we have developed here though, is a positive culture.

“We believe a happy swimmer is a faster swimmer.”

Heading into the championships McLean said the club will start to tweak its training regimes in preparation for the meet.

“Our swimmers are tapering their program according to where they’re at in their training,” he said.

“We’re also changing our start times – now starting at 7am.

“That’s a little closer to when the warm-ups begin at Chandler so we’re adjusting accordingly.”

The club will also provide something a little different for its swimmers at the event.

“We’re calling it the Party Tent,” McLean said.

“Basically we’re taking a big marquee down there and it’ll have inflatable chairs and others things.

“When you’re at these events all day it can be very draining so we want somewhere where the swimmers can relax when they’re not in action.”

Hugh Pollock will be among the swimmers at the meet – his first time competing at this level.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

“Training has been a little harder, I’ve been doing a lot more aerobic work and tougher sets but it’s good.

“I’m hoping to finish top three in some of my swims.”

The 12-year-old said he will draw comfort from being part of a large team.

“It’s good for the club and everyone swimming,” he said.

“I feel comfortable being part of big team – there’s lots of support.”
