A huge quest for rodeo’s little princess

- Matthew Purcell

AFTER 12 months of placing her fate in the hands of a select judging panel, Maggie Gallaway has been crowned a Junior Rodeo Princess.

The 11-year-old from Stanthorpe won National Rodeo Association’s 2018 quest, capping of an arduous process.

Throughout the year Maggie competed in quests, travelling all around Queensland in preparation for the final series.

“I decided last year, that this year, this is what I wanted to do,” she said.

“At each quest I was given questions and had to work out with horses. For the final I sat a written exam, did an interview and a workout.

“Basically just had to try and control my horse the best I could.

“The written test was in Maryborough, interview at Tenterfield and work out in Caboolture.”

When Maggie took up the challenge she was one of several contestants. As the year wore on this number dwindled.

“It was a bit of a shock I guess because at the start when there was all those other girls and I never thought I’d be the winner,” she said.

“So now I have to basically promote the sport of rodeo, I have to be at every grand entry and have to encourage girls to do it next year.”

The keen barrel racer is excited for what’s ahead. “Barrel racing is something I want to do the rest of my life,” she said.
