Thwarting the hot summer sun’s UV rays

Summer is here, and with it comes the slathering on of sunscreens. A common complaint with keeping sunsafe is the greasy nature of many sunscreens — particular­ly on the face.

While many people are willing to slip, slop, slap on their arms, legs and neck, several would rather don a hat to protect the face.

It should come as no surprise, however, that wearing a hat is not enough to protect the face from UV rays. Even if you don’t get sunburnt per se, UV rays can still do a lot of damage to your skin and speed up its aging process.

We don’t recommend you stop using sunscreen and hats, of course, but there are many makeup products you can add to your usual routine that add to sun safety for your face.

A quick tip: the higher the SPF number, the better the protection.

The Internatio­nal Dermal Institute and Dermalogic­a says in order to figure out how long the SPF will work, multiply the SPF by the time it takes your skin to burn without a sunscreen — so if it takes your skin five minutes to burn and you’re using an SPF 30, you can have up to 150 minutes safely in the sun.

LIQUIDS, CREAMS AND SERUMS

BB, CC, even DD, creams often have SPF in them, and you can find most with a minimum SPF 30.

These ‘alphabet creams’ are excellent as a primer or as a replacemen­t for your foundation, however SPF is also included in many liquid foundation­s on the market.

Depending on how much you want to spend, you can get them from SPF 15 to 50-plus.
