BOXING: It’s on. The exciting emergence of Toowoomba super lightweight Steven Spark has been rewarded with a world tilt bout in his home town early next year.

Spark’s trainer-manager Brendon Smith yesterday confirmed 22-year-old Spark will face Mexican Ronaldo Loco Castillo at Rumours International on March 9 for the IBF World Youth Championship.

The fight will headline Toowoomba’s biggest annual fight card.

“When the former champion turned 26 and was forced to relinquish his belt we pushed hard to bring the vacant title fight here,” Smith said.

“It’s a big challenge for Steve, but we believe he’ll become world champion and it’s huge that we are able to bring this bout to Toowoomba.”

Spark will be defending a seven win, one loss record in the bout which became a reality after his latest TKO victory over experienced Japanese rival Taisho Ozawa.

But 20-year-old Castillo will bring to Toowoomba an explosive record of 18 wins, 14 by knockout, and one loss.

It’s a record that will require Spark to reach yet another level if he’s to bring the belt to Toowoomba.

Spark’s preparation is already under way as he focusses on fulfilling the expectations of his supporters.

“I’m motivated,” Spark said yesterday.

“I’m hungry and excited. “To be fighting for a world title in my back yard — that’s massive.

“He’s had more knockouts than I’ve had fights.

“He’s had a lot of experience and a lot of fights in a short amount of time.

“But I’m feeling confident. Confident in my ability.

“There’s a lot of work coming up over the next 31⁄2 months. ”
