Cancer council acknowledges dedication

-

THE Cancer Council Queensland chief executive officer Chris McMillan took the time to acknowledge the work of the council’s volunteers on International Volunteer Day.

International Volunteer Day was held on Wednesday to celebrate and acknowledge volunteers around the world.

Cancer Council Queensland volunteer Jan Byrne has worked in the council’s Warwick Volunteer Branch for the past eight years.

The branch had its hard work recognised at a celebration where it was crowned the highest fundraising branch in south-west Queensland.

Ms Byrne said the win was a credit to all the volunteers and residents who support the branch.

“We are passionate about bringing the community together through catering at local events and doing raffles throughout the year to raise funds for the council,” Ms Byrne said.

“We have raised about $40,000 through community support this year alone.”

Ms McMillan said the council’s volunteers were the heart of the charity’s work.

“The Cancer Council Queensland was founded in 1961 when a group of community-minded volunteers banded together to do something about cancer,” Ms McMillan said.

“I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the branch.”
