Stingers swimming in the sea

-

IN AUSTRALIAN waters, several sea creatures are capable of stinging you.

Creatures like jellyfish, are generally easy to avoid, but can cause discomfort if you are stung. The intensity and severity of a sting depends on the type of stinger, location of the sting, and the victim.

Most minor stings from

non-tropical stingers result in some irritation, pain, swelling, redness and itching to the affected area for a short period of time. For most people, the reaction may last a few hours to a few days and they respond well to treatment.

However some have a very severe allergic reaction. They

are not common but can be life threatening and require emergency care.

*Always swim at a patrolled beach, ask a lifeguard for help and advice and swim in the stinger nets where provided.
