Brown snake cools off in toilets

SHOPPERS and staff at the BMS Mitre 10 on Carrington Rd were taken by surprise when a snake decided to visit the store’s toilet.

A+ Reptile Relocations Toowoomba owner Alex Reynolds was called out to the site about noon on Sunday to remove a 2ft brown snake from the men’s bathroom at the store.

Mr Reynolds said the snake would have entered the store to avoid the noon heat.

“Snakes also don’t like the temperature too hot and will usually enter houses and shops to cool off,” he said.

“The cool floor kept the snake more docile than what he would have been out in the sun.”

Mr Reynolds said even though the snake was a juvenile it was as dangerous as an adult.

“Brown snakes are just as dangerous as mum and dad when they come out of the egg,” he said.

The snake catcher relocated the serpent after gently prompting the snake to go into the catcher’s bag.

“It is a good relocation when you don’t have to touch the snake,” Mr Reynolds said.

“Because the snake had nowhere to hide, he was more than happy to go into the bag.”

Mr Reynolds said it was important for people not to try and catch snakes themselves.

“People get bitten when they try to either kill or catch the snake themselves,” he said.

“The best thing people can do is to keep an eye on the snake, call a snake removalist and take and send a photograph of the animal to the removalist.”

If you come across a snake in your residence or your business call A+ Reptile Relocations Toowoomba on 0413 163 518.
