Gundy dairy business beats big wigs to win top award
Gundy milk beat Norco to gong
BARAMBAH Organics has been named a champion in the 2019 Australian Grand Dairy Awards for its Light Milk.
Ian and Jane Campbell started Barambah Organics in 2002.
They have two dairy farms in Goondiwindi and a milk processing plant in Darra where they make all kinds of products. including milks and cheeses.
Barambah Organics had strong competition from northern New South Wales dairy company, Norco, who had two entries in the Specialty White Dairy Drink Category.
After rigorous judging the Barambah Organics Light Milk variety was crowned the champion of the extremely competitive category.
The milk contains less than two per cent fat but has the same taste as the full cream milk variety.
“Like a lot of farmers, we’ve recently struggled with some really tough drought conditions which makes this achievement extra rewarding for us,” Mrs Campbell said.
“It’s really good for our staff because everyone works so hard, as everyone in agriculture does, and it’s great to get some recognition for that team work.
“And it lifts everyone’s spirits to get an injection of energy like this.”
The Australian Grand Dairy Awards began in 1999, designed to recognise and award excellence and innovation in Australian dairy produce.
Barambah Organics attributes their achievement to the care given to the dairy cattle on their farms.
The dairy cattle are mainly grass fed, with additional quality grain added to the cow’s diet at milking times.
The certified organic grain is grown on Barambah’s farms.
“Our cattle have given us so much and we want to make sure they are treated correctly,” Mrs Campbell said.
“Ian’s family have been dairying since 1912.
“And Ian studied animal nutrition at university.”
In 2012 and 2015, Barambah Organics’ Labna was crowned the Champion Flavoured Cheese of Australia.
Barambah was also named Champion Milk and Natural Yoghurt of Queensland in 2018, a significant achievement for a small family-run business.
When Barambah Organics started it had just eight stockists.
Now its products are found in 800 stores across Australia and internationally.
