CRICKET: Toowoomba Grammar has maintained its dominance of the Tom Allen Memorial Trophy, scoring a comprehensive win over Downlands College at the weekend.

With the 66th instalment of the fixture moved to Mills Oval after originally being scheduled for Downlands, it was the new home side that made a best first impression.

Bowling first, the bowling attack of TGS was able to overpower the Downlands batsmen throughout the innings.

After 42 overs, Grammar was able to dismiss its rivals for 102 runs, and wasted no time in chasing down the modest total.

It took just 15 overs for the GPS side to chase down the total, with Harry Meiklejohn top scoring with an unbeaten 51 for his First XI debut, and Jacob Gross chipping in with 38.

TGS coach Steve Fryer said the bowlers were able to lay a strong platform from the outset which saw them get on top early.

“Going into the game the team had to their let skills do the talking and I was pretty proud of how they did that,” Fryer said.

“They had a bit of trouble getting the wicket up with a bit of rain during the week, and we had wickets up from previous weeks, so there was a little bit of juice in the pitch so we elected to bowl.

“Everyone chipped in by getting one to two wickets, and all went for around two an over.

“For us it was about keeping our eye on the prize, and it was a great hit out.”

Fryer was complementary of Meiklejohn’s initial outing, as the batsmen got the job done early.

“It wasn’t a deliberate approach to be as positive as they were,” he said.

“They just played what was in front of them and hit some nice ones.”

Grammar gets the chance to pick up its first win of the GPS season when the school hosts Ipswich Grammar School on Saturday.
