Army medals returned to thankful war hero

- ANTON ROSE anton.rose@thechronicle.com.au

LAST month a nightmare turned reality for Australian serviceman John Wood.

Missing the medals awarded to him for services and sacrifices to his country, a Facebook post appealing for help sparked a viral reaction.

Today, however, he is on top of the world after those precious awards made their way back to him.

“A collector had bought them a little while ago and he has military friends that had seen the post,” Mr Wood said.

“He searched Facebook for the post and contacted me straight away.”

The collector and good Samaritan, who wished to remain anonymous, carried out his good deed last week.

Speaking at the conclusion of this traumatic chapter in the lives of Mr Wood and his family, he said he was thankful to all those who helped.

“I am very grateful for the power of social media and to everyone that reached out,” he said.

“There is still an investigation ongoing with some very good information. We still haven’t had any of the other items returned, but are still optimistic and hopefully the police will be able to lay charges sometime in the near future.”
