Highfields dominant on day one

-

CRICKET: Highfields-Railways have inched closer to their first win of the TCI A-grade season following their first day of play against Southern Districts.

After suffering the first outright loss of the season last round to Western Districts, the Bulldogs are in a position to deal the same fate to Souths.

The Magpies were dismissed for 68 in their first innings, before Highfields scored quick runs with the bat, declaring their innings at 4-150.

In their second dig, Souths remain under the pump at 2-2, still 80 runs behind their opponents.

Metropolitan-Easts face an uphill battle to avoid dropping crucial competition points in their match with Western Districts.

Batting first, the Trojans were unable to handle the onslaught of the Wests bowling attack, amassing just 83 runs.

Daley Martin was unstoppable, producing figures of 4-24 from 15.2 overs, while Shaun McCarthy and Luke Neale both picked up a pair of scalps.

In reply, Wests found themselves in a commanding position at 2-46 at the close of play, after Matt Elford and Jack Carter took the vital wickets of Sam Neale and Chris Gillam respectively.

University has a golden opportunity to seal a finals spot after a strong start against Northern Brothers Diggers.

Diggers batted first, putting a total of 157 on the board.

Getting their chance with the bat, University finished the day at 2-59 with Hemal Shah and Tully Willson at the crease.
