Accused car thieves in court

Pair accused of driving at 160kmh in stolen vehicle

TWO people accused of driving a stolen vehicle at speeds of up to 160kmh on the Warrego Hwy have had their charges mentioned before Toowoomba Magistrates Court.

Henry Allan Martin, 30, remained in the watch house when his charges were mentioned in court.

His solicitor Amber Acreman told the court she did not require her client to be brought into court because there would be no application for bail on her client’s behalf at this stage.

Ms Acreman asked that her client’s case be adjourned over until today so police could check a bail address her client had provided.

Co-accused Ebony Dempsey, 22, appeared briefly in court and remained quietly in the court dock as her solicitor Michael McElhinney similarly asked that her case be held over until today so a bail address for her could be arranged.

It is believed Dempsey hails from Victoria.

The pair was arrested in Oakey on Monday afternoon after PolAir and police teams on the ground had tracked them in a white Holden Commodore which police claim was stolen in Bundaberg at the weekend.

The stolen car was believed to have been speeding on the highway in and out of oncoming traffic.

Witnesses reported the car had reached speeds of 160kmh along the stretch of highway between Chinchilla and Dalby.

Police apprehended the pair in Oakey where the car was found abandoned.

Neither of the accused was required to enter any pleas to their respective charges which include armed robbery, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

There being no application for bail for either accused, Magistrate Viviana Keegan remanded both in custody and adjourned their respective matters to today when bail applications on their behalf were expected to be made.

It is expected police will object to their bail applications.
