With one eye on the future, the South West Queensland Thunder are hoping to add more young female players to their 2019 squads.

Thunder women’s technical director Kris Hemmerling said they had enough players but would love to add a little more depth to their under-18 side.

“We’ve got the players and have put together quite a good team,” Hemmerling said.

“It’s a difficult age bracket though because kids have a lot of other commitments.

“We’d love to add a few more players to cover for things like players being unavailable be it because of injury or other commitments.”

Looking for girls in the 16-18 years bracket, Hemmerling said players could attend training sessions to test the water.

“We’d love for anyone interested to contact the club and maybe attend a few training sessions,” he said.

“They can test themselves against our players and see what they think.

“There are a lot of players out there who are better than they think they are – they just need to maybe try taking that next step.”

Hemmerling said players lining up in the under-18s could potentially feature in the Thunder’s senior women’s team, however the club’s expectations of its younger members were very realistic.

“There are more important things than football,” he said.

“Education is one of those things.

“We understand that our players will have other things that take them away from football from time-to-time, and it’s important they (the players) have balance in their lives.

“We’re also focused on the long-term success of the club.

“We want to have success now but our goal is also to provide a pathway for and to develop young female players in the region.”

The Thunder women train at the Highfields Sports Complex every Monday and Wednesday – potential new players can contact the club through their Facebook page.
