Robbers held victims at gunpoint, court told

TWO people accused of being involved in a violent home invasion in Millmerran during which police claim a gun had been held to the heads of a woman and an 18-month-old child have been remanded in custody.

Daniel Stephen Wright, 22, did not apply for bail when he made a brief appearance in Toowoomba Magistrates Court and was held in custody.

Co-accused Brooke MaryEllen Sorensen, 19, made an application for bail through her solicitor Kyna Morice.

Reading from the written police objection to bail, Magistrate Viviana Keegan noted it was alleged three men wearing balaclavas had entered the Millmerran home about 11.45am, Monday, one armed with a sawn-off shotgun, another with a handgun and another with a baseball bat.

Police claimed the trio had gone to steal two weapons safes from the house while Sorensen waited in the car.

One of the safes proved too heavy and was left behind.

Ms Keegan said it was alleged six rifles had been stolen from the home and police claim the stolen weapons were found in the boot of a car during a police search of the Cambooya residence where Wright had been staying.

Ms Keegan told a sobbing Sorensen that though she had no criminal history and it was her first time before a court, the charges she was facing were so serious and that it was alleged weapons had been used that the teenager had to show cause why detention was not justified in the circumstances.

Ms Morice said her client had been living in Caboolture, and her mother and sister were in court supporting her.

Her client would reside with her mother should she be granted bail, she said.

Ms Morrice said her client had given an interview to police and made certain admissions and she had raised a defence to the charges.

However, Ms Keegan said though Sorensen was charged as a party to the alleged offences and wasn’t considered the primary offender, she could have removed herself from the situation but hadn’t.

Both accused have been charged with a series of matters including robbery while armed in company, deprivation of liberty, unlawful possession of weapons, and demanding property with menace.

Ms Keegan refused bail and remanded Sorensen in custody with all charges to be mentioned in the same court again on May 15.
