AFLDD bringing the big fixtures

- SEAN TEUMA sean.teuma@thechronicle.com.au

AUSSIE RULES: With the AFL Darling Downs season less than 10 days away, anticipation continues to build, and a number of questions will be answered.

Can University win its fourth title in a row? Will the Hawks finally break its run of seconds? Is it finally South Toowoomba’s time?

The Chronicle looks at the top five fixtures that will shape the Allied Pickford Cup season.

ROUND 3 - USQ VS GOONDIWINDI

Fans won’t have to wait long for a rematch of last year’s grand final when the Cougars and Hawks clash. University has the runs on the board, especially with games played outside of Riddles Oval, so Goondiwindi will be looking to get an edge over their rivals early in the season.

ROUND 3 - SOUTH TOOWOOMBA VS SOUTH BURNETT

The ANZAC round is stacked with high quality contests, and this is another. South Toowoomba is one of the premier teams of the competition, and when at full-strength, South Burnett can lay claim to that tag as well. If the Saints bring a full line-up to town, this is one not to be missed.

ROUND 6 - COOLAROO VS TOOWOOMBA

An intriguing fixture on a number of fronts. For Coolaroo, it will be a game they’ve pencilled in as a must-win if they are to make a return to the finals. On the other hand, this will provide a strong gauge on how far the Tigers have come.

ROUND 11 - WARWICK VS GOONDIWINDI

Warwick would have had this one pencilled in as soon as the draw came out. With all the commotion about last year’s preliminary final, the Redbacks will be looking to get one over the Hawks on their home turf at WCU Oval.

ROUND 17 - SOUTH BURNETT VS COOLAROO

Come August, this fixture could well be a determiner for who will make the finals. Both of these sides narrowly missed out last year, and will have an aim of making amends for that in 2019. The winner of this clash could well be on their way.
