Highfields celebrating 30 years

-

CRICKET: An unprecedented season in 1989 is being remembered this weekend, as Highfields brings the gang back together.

They are marking 30 years since the club won all five grades of the Toowoomba Cricket season, a feat that has not been matched since, with a reunion on Saturday.

Brett Nielsen was part of the reserve grade team on that fateful day in 1989, and he has fond memories of the moment history was created.

With the clean sweep hinging on the result of the reserve grade final, the pressure was on to continue the dominance of Highfields.

“By the time we were playing, we were the last team to finish, so all the other Highfields sides submerged onto Gold Park,” Nielsen said.

“There was so many people there with the other grades finished. At the time we were favourites to win, but the Agrade wasn’t, which turned the tide.

“I remember John Cole hit a six to win the game. It was euphoric. Everyone raced onto the ground.

“We didn’t appreciate the significance of it at the time, but sitting back now, you realise how special it was.”

The reunion at Highfields Sports Park will start at noon, doubling as an introduction to the new facilities recently unveiled.

“We’ll share a few stories of the run that we had,” Nielsen said.

“The day is close to the anniversary on March 25.” Sean Teuma
