NOT–FOR–PROFIT community clubs and associations are part of the fabric of our community.

They include sporting and special interest clubs, service clubs and even business or professional associations.

Like anyone else, people with disabilities enjoy connecting with their community through special interests.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) local area coordinators work with participants to identify suitable options, ensuring they can join in.

The NDIA will also work with community organisations to increase their awareness of the needs and desires of people with disability.

As a resource for clubs and associations, the NDIA will help to explore strategies that assist in making access and participation for people with disabilities easier.

This might include activities such as:

■ Identifying basic training that would help employees, volunteers and business operators work more effectively with special needs.

■ Advice on facilities including minor modifications, like more accessible paths.

■ Transport arrangements for away games, field trips or outings.

■ Kitchen tools to help people with disabilities participate in regular activities, like working on a stall or sausage sizzle.

Clubs and associations interested in ensuring their programs are suitable for people with disability, should contact their local NDIS and be ready to connect with a diverse range of community needs.
