Night to help region’s farmers

- JIORDAN TOLLI

BORN and raised on the land, Clare Jeffries knows what it’s like to experience hardship because of drought and to watch her loved ones suffer.

“I can still remember my Dad having to shoot cattle in 1965,” Mrs Jeffries said.

“There are farmers out there doing it hard and who are too proud to ask for help.”

After the ongoing and devastating drought which has been felt across the region, Mrs Jeffries felt compelled to do something to help.

She came up with an idea for a night on the town, where all proceeds go to local farmers “no ifs or buts about it”.

The Night Out for Drought on Saturday is an opportunity for residents to donate some money while also enjoying a fun and eventful evening.

“I know it’ll only be a drop in the ocean, but we need to help our farmers,” Mrs Jeffries said.

“There are poor buggers contemplating suicide.”

Not looking for any recognition, the Lions Club of Warwick member is asking for residents to get behind the cause.

Supported by multiple Lions members and folk at the RSL, Mrs Jeffries said it had been emotional watching the generosity of local businesses.

The Night Out for Drought will be held at King’s Theatre, Warwick this Saturday night.

There will be trivia with prizes, raffles, free snacks, music and a cent sale. Tickets are $10.

Doors open at 6.30pm before the evening of fun and games start at 7pm.
