As the Toowoomba Valleys Fillies prepare for their season opener in two days time, the club has announced its leaders for the BRL division one season.

Rosie Parsons and Kaylah Pearce will share co-captain duties as the team prepares for its second season in the top grade.

It marks a continued rise in the sport for Pearce, who returned to rugby league last year, and she said taking on the leadership role was something she was looking forward to.

“It was great to find out,” she said.

“It’s my second year at the Fillies and being able to lead the team is a great feeling.

“I played in the U7s at Tara and a couple of times through school, but then focused more on netball.

“When I moved back to Toowoomba I decided to join the Fillies.

“I had friends that were playing, and my partner plays at Valleys as well. I watch footy way too often and being able to play is one of the greatest things.”

The combination of Parsons and Pearce as co-captains covers a number of bases across the field, with the former lining up in the halves and the latter controlling things at the fullback position.

“Rosie’s a great person,” Pearce said.

“She knows a lot about the game being in the halves. She knows where people need to be and can see everything that is going to happen.

“It’s going to be a great experience to be able to work alongside her.”

Pearce is well aware of the tough road ahead that the Fillies face in division one.

After winning one game last year, she hopes that the work the team has put in over the off-season can translate into further success this season.

“One of our biggest problems last year was commitment and consistently getting people to training,” she said.

“It’s one of the biggest things we need, and you can’t work on things if the full team isn’t there.

“We’ve been able to work on things that we haven’t been able to previously.

“We’re all just keen to play. We want to go further than we did last year where we only won one game.

“Everyone has been committed and working hard during the pre-season, so hopefully we can put our best foot forward and we can get closer this year.”

Parsons and Pearce will begin their reign in charge on Saturday when the Valleys Fillies travel east to face with West Brisbane.

The division two Valleys Fillies start their season at Herb Steinohrt Oval against Southport on the same day.
