SOAKING UP FUN AT SHOW
City recognises its rich agricultural roots at iconic celebration
THE threat of rain didn’t stop Sophia and Hayley Lynch (above) from having a ball at this year’s Heritage Bank Toowomba Royal Show with mum Annalise.
The trio was among thousands who headed to the showgrounds yesterday for day one of the annual celebration of our region.
DUDLEY Horn’s recreated and restored Comet windmill is steeped in Australian history.
So it only made sense the massive structure was dedicated to an equally historic organisation in the 11th Light Horse Regiment, during a ceremony at the Heritage Bank Toowoomba Royal Show yesterday.
Mr Horn, together with his wife Jan Aderman-Horn, painstakingly collected the pieces needed to recreate the windmill, of which only 15 where built during the early 20th century.
Two years on, he said the sight of the windmill in action was still spectacular.
“I wanted it in a place where it could be seen and appreciated,” he said.
“I never get sick of it – Jan and I come out here just to watch it sometimes.”
Australian Governor-General Peter Cosgrove unveiled the dedication plaque, which was followed by a re-enactment of the Light Horse Regiment.
Dignities, including Groom MP John McVeigh and Mayor Paul Antonio, were there to celebrate the occasion.
It capped off a strong first day of the show, despite some windy conditions at the showgrounds.
