Officer to start 48 state quest for cause

-

SENIOR Constable Chris Hay will today embark on his globe-trotting challenge to help a cause close to his heart.

The Darling Downs police officer will attempt to visit all 48 state capitals on mainland United States within 48 days.

The catch – he won’t be able to use public transport or a hire car, and has a budget of only $25 per day.

“I will not be allowed to hitchhike and if someone gives me a ride they can only take me through a maximum of three states,” Snr Const Hay said.

Snr Const Hay is raising funds for the Children’s Hospital Foundation, which helped his family after son Lachlan was diagnosed with a rare liver disorder at seven weeks of age.

He donated part of his liver to his son in 2012.

Lachlan, now 8, “lives life to the fullest”.

The officer aims to raise more than $24,000 for the foundation.

“Half the time you’re not even aware the Children’s Hospital Foundation are there because you take them and the work that they do for granted,” Snr Const Hay said. “They are an important part of anyone’s journey with a child with an illness.”

The money will go to fund research into biliary atresia and purchasing vital equipment, including infrared vein finders.

To follow the journey or to donate go to the Children’s Hospital Foundation Fundraising page.
