Edge fishing returns to form with drop in water temps

- WITH KRIS GEORGE FROM FISH ’N’ BITS BAIT & TACKLE

SOMERSET DAM

SOME great fishing out on the lake this week with anglers getting their fair share of fish.

With the recent rain during the week it should see the fish push a little deeper.

Targeting these fish tight on the bottom with chatterbaits and spinnerbaits accounted for the larger fish up to 55cm.

South of Pelican Point and the Kirkleigh Flats is holding the numbers of smaller fish.

The shallower flats above Kirkleigh are fishing well with great numbers of yellowbelly being on the bite.

Metal blades worked the best on these fish.

WIVENHOE DAM

With the recent rain fall we should see the water temperature start to drop and the edge fishing come back into its own.

Throwing lipless crankbaits and spinnerbaits will be the lures of choice.

For the deeper schooled fish, casting spoons and blades have fished extremely well.

The flats out from Billy’s Bay and Platypus Cliffs have held reasonable numbers of fish.

LESLIE DAM

Still fishing very consistently throughout the week with anglers catching some great cod up to 80cm.

Trolling has been the best method as covering ground has been key to having a successful day.

The bait anglers having a good bite period into the afternoon with saltwater yabbies being the bait of choice.

GLENLYON DAM

The fishing is a little more promising this week.

Fishing the deeper standing timber was the stand out.

Casting 1 to 2oz spinnerbaits through the timber was the lure of choice.

The yellowbelly being quite confident in taking Jigged Zx blades in these same areas.

COPETON DAM

It’s time, with the cold rainy days it can only mean one thing, swimbaits and topwater.

Fishing these baits over the shallow flats is what this lake is known for.

Long cast over these flats on dawn and dusk is the prime bite time when the fish are cruising these areas.

The Jackall Gigantarel and Gantarel are ideal for this situation.

GOLD COAST OFFSHORE

With the best weekend weather-wise, the fishing was red hot offshore off the Gold Coast.

The Spanish and spotty mackerel have been in good numbers east of Mermaid Beach.

Trolling shallower hardbodies worked a treat for some while for others live bait was the best option.

The long tail and mac tuna have been cruising just outside the Jumpinpin Bar.

These fish have been quite flighty and hard to catch at times.

Long casts with metal slugs or stickbaits will be your best chance.

The bottom fishing has been very generous over the last few weeks.

Snapper are in good numbers on the 24 and 36 fathom reefs with plastics and soft vibes getting the bigger fish.

DAM CLOSURES

Cooby and Cressbrook dams still remain closed due to the algae bloom outbreak.
