AN AMBITIOUS master plan to transform Glenholme Park has been revealed as the board seeks funding for the centre.

With the first stage of the project costed at $10 million, initial plans include the construction of a clubhouse facility and bowls greens which would be the home of the West Toowoomba Bowls Club.

The plan would transform the Glenholme Park rugby league grounds into a sprawling multi-sports centre with provisions for basketball, squash and netball.

The master plan also proposes including creating a home base for the Toowoomba RSL and other community groups.

Board chairman Gary Palmer said the vision for the site, bordered by Hursley Rd and Boundary St, was simple and compelling.

“We have a significant parcel of land here that is being under-used as a rugby league ground alone,” he said.

“There are many other sporting clubs and community groups that need facilities but don’t have the resources to run them on their own.

“Through this redevelopment, we want to bring a wide range of groups together to maximise the usage of this valuable asset to the city.”

Anchored by Brothers Toowoomba, the redevelopment would unite clubs under the Glenholme Park banner.

Plans include a new two-storey licensed clubhouse, two covered lawn bowls greens, a multi-purpose indoor sports facility earmarked as the future home of Toowoomba Basketball, a sports-medicine precinct bringing in a range of allied health professionals, and the scope for future commercial activities.

“By bringing a number of sports and other activities together in the one sport (centre), we can all benefit and develop a facility that the whole of Toowoomba can be proud of,” Mr Palmer said.

The board has planned meetings with all levels of government and private investors to secure funding needed for the first stage of development.

“Governments at both state and federal level can get the best bang for their buck by supporting developments that serve a large number of sports and other community groups,” Mr Palmer said.
