FORMER Prime Minister Tony Abbott paid a quick visit to Toowoomba yesterday as part of a charity bike ride raising funds for a defence personnel charity.

The Pollie Pedal ride was first organised by Mr Abbott in 1998 and has travelled through Toowoomba several times in the past.

This year’s route travels from the Gold Coast to Brisbane, via Warwick, Toowoomba, Dalby, Kingaroy and the Sunshine Coast and is raising funds for Soldier On.

“Soldier On is a relatively new charity which works with young ex-service personnel and people who are making the transition from service to civilian life,” Mr Abbott said.

“There are lots of groups that work with veterans, most notably the RSL, but particularly for younger veterans, there’s a bit of a gap.

“It was a beautifully picturesque ride through some lovely rolling country. It was a nice contrast to the tough ride from (Monday).”

The ex-politician, who served as Prime Minister from 2013 to 2015, lost his seat of Warringah to independent Zali Steggall at the last election.

Mr Abbott this year handed over the politician reins of the ride to current Energy Minister Angus Taylor.

“It needs a pollie to run it, not an ex-pollie,” Mr Abbot said. “I think he’s the perfect person to take it over.”

Other politicians on the ride included David Gillespie.

Mr Taylor cycled into the town ahead of Mr Abbott as he had to meet with TSBE, FKG and Groom MP John McVeigh.

Serving Australian Army lieutenant colonel Neil Stanton was among dozens of other people, including ex-service personnel and corporate types taking part in the right.

“I have found the experience to be amazing,” he said.

“The quality of the people you meet, their experiences, the stories they tell is second to none.

“Everyone makes sure all of the team arrive safely at each location with no one left behind. Everybody looks out for each other.”

Polly Pedal has raised about $7 million for various causes over its 22 years.
