Tourism group’s new direction

-

SOUTHERN Queensland Country Tourism held its first board meeting with chief executive officer Peter Homan in Toowoomba last week.

SQCT Chair Dr Jane Summers said that the board was impressed at the volume of work already achieved by Mr Homan and his team and excited by the new direction and future possibilities discussed.

“Since Peter commenced as CEO in early July, he has begun travelling around the region consulting with councils and tourism operators, familiarising himself with the wealth of tourism product we have, listening to ideas and looking for opportunities we can develop, “she said.

Dr Summers said intensive stakeholder engagement would continue in the months leading up to the AGM in midNovember.

Mr Homan said meeting with local government and tourism operators and gaining a thorough understanding of the region’s tourism experiences was key to moving forward.

“Getting acquainted with the product and hearing the insights and the challenges faced by the people on the ground allows us to get a feel for the issues and the opportunities, which then inform our longerterm strategies and how we can best refine them and enact them,” Mr Homan said.

“In the next three months my priority is to get out there I’m attending the Bush Council meeting in Roma from August 6-8 - it’s always a good place to be to ensure tourism is high on the agenda.

“I’m looking forward to launching the new Southern Downs food map at Warwick Town Hall this coming weekend.”

The next board meeting is scheduled for August 22.
