A growing trend in Australian backyards is gathering around a fire pit.

Adding a fire pit can be a surprisingly inexpensive and attractive focal point, also providing extra space for entertaining.

There are built-in fire pits that can be a welcome addition to almost any backyard.

But easier and less expensive is buying a free standing fire pit from the increasingly wide range available.

Regardless of the type of fire pit you choose, firstly you will need to ensure you have prepared a flat, fireproof surface surrounding the fire pit. Ideally, you would also want enough space to place chairs and side tables around your fire pit.

To complete the space, a border of rocks around the fire pit will allow it to feel like an intimate area.

Alternatively, if the fire pit is to be a feature for outdoor entertaining, framing the surrounding fire pit space with plenty of fairy lights creates the perfect party setting.

Another option that is easy to create is a casual, bohemian space for your fire pit. Surround your fire pit with some fabulous floor cushions and ottomans for that extra laid-back seating.

This works especially well when the area is set against a backdrop of lush foliage to complement the natural, boho vibe. Regardless of the size of your garden, it’s easy to create an area of interest and an al fresco entertaining area with a fire pit.

The ambience of a fire can transport your family and friends into a magical celebratory haven as they do what we have done since the beginning – gather around a fire with your tribe.
