Plates help tell story

- ALEXIA AUSTIN

WHEN deciding on a caption for her number plate, Toowoomba woman Lisa-Marie Preston wanted to celebrate one of the best days of her life, her wedding.

Mrs Preston has become one of the first drivers in Toowoomba to own a caption personalised number plate, something that is now offered to Queensland residents with colour plates.

After time spent deliberating, Mrs Preston decided on the caption MRS PRESTON (heart) EST 2019 as a reminder of her April wedding.

“Number plates can tell a story and I’ve always been that person that couldn’t wait to get married,” Mrs Preston said.

“I tried lots of combinations to make sure I wouldn’t embarrass my husband.

“Seeing my number plate now, it brings back a lot of great memories from the day.”

Mrs Preston said her father-in-law was quick to notice the change to her plate.

“He loved it, so that was nice,’ she said.

“I’ve had the MOO number plate for more than 10 years now, it was time for a

change.

“Moo is a nickname given to me by my favourite cousin, so it was a nod to her.”

The new plate format comes from Personalised Plates Queensland. As well as a full suite of letters and numbers, captions can include social media mainstays the hashtag, underscore, love heart and ‘at’ symbols.

The dollar sign and telephone symbol are also available, allowing businesses to include a key price point or their contact phone number on their plate.

More than 100 captioned plates have been sold this month. Of that, 20 per cent include a love heart, while 14 per cent include a hashtag. Around 30 per cent of captions are personal messages while 21 per cent are promoting a business.

“I think it’s a way for people to share something about themselves,” Mrs Preston said.

“It’s also a smart and unique way for businesses advertise, if you look at it from that angle.”
