New vision for arts council

Committee to discuss at AGM

ARTS Council Toowoomba is hoping to draw in new creatives at its AGM next week as the club faces declining member numbers.

The ACT has produced multiple pieces of public art since its creation in 2005, including the splashing back project in response to Toowoomba’s floods and avant garden in response to the dry.

ACT treasurer Jennifer Wright said the committee would unveil exciting news during the meeting.

“We’re going to be working with the Toowoomba regional council to develop a process to make more permanent public art that’s community driven

“We want to leave a legacy, even if the arts council doesn’t go on for ever, this is important to us – to work on things that have been a point of frustration.

“We want the community to become more involved in public art and therefore improve the quality.”

Cobb and Co Queensland Museum Network operations manager Steve Cooper has been chosen as the guest speaker at this year’s event. His talk will focus on the importance of connection within the community, a pertinent message as the council faces decline.

“We would love to see some fresh faces at the AGM, things have changed since we first started,” Ms Wright said.

“What will be will be, that’s how I think. But we have to attract people and we have before.

“Without the projects its hard to attract people because there is nothing of value. Hopefully this project we work on now will assist the arts community to work more smoothly with the council in developing public art.”

Last year at the AGM, new president Associate Professor Janet McDonald, spoke about the challenges of maintaining community-based organisations where volunteering is the means of undertaking most of the work.

The AGM will be held at Cobb and Co Museum at 5.30pm on November 7. All residents are invited to attend the AGM.
