Driver’s shock at snake under car seat

A TOOWOOMBA driver has made a shocking discovery, finding a snake under the seat of their car after a 20km drive into town.

A post shared on Facebook stated the driver left their window open an inch and the snake “found his way into the car … only to pop its head out while sitting in the car”.

“It was underneath the seat where my little boy was sitting,” the post said.

“Please be careful, the drought has made all the wildlife come closer in search of food and water. Feeling very grateful we are all safe and well.”

Gunter Glaser from Darling Downs Snake Catchers 24/7 identified the snake as an Eastern Brown, and guessed it was about 1m long.

He said it wasn’t common to find a snake inside a vehicle.

“You can only guess why they do certain things that seem strange. It could be to get out of the heat,” Mr Glaser said.

“They just think it’s somewhere in the shade.

“They hate being discovered, they could be looking for a hiding place.”

Mr Glaser said it was unlikely it would have been able to climb through the window.

“I think it was in there longer than the person thought and it’s got through the door when this person has turned their back,” he said.

“The window looks too high. It’s more likely it got in with the door open, and again I’m only guessing.

“It would have to get on the bonnet and along the window sill. You’d need a sixfoot brown to reach that high.”

Mr Glaser said Eastern Browns didn’t go out of their way to bite people, but the family was still very lucky.

“Even a hand going under the seat to adjust it, they might think you’re trying to attack and strike.”
