Work starts on fitness resolutions

GYMS across Toowoomba are preparing for the New Year’s rush today, as residents put down the Christmas food, lace up their runners and take aim at their New Year’s fitness resolutions.

At World Gym Toowoomba, nursing colleagues Mikaela Ryan and Paige Howes had already started on their 2020 goal; to be beach ready for their trip to Bali in March.

“We had a lot of study in 2019, so we found that we rarely made it to the gym,” Ms Howes said.

“It’s time to rein it back in, work on our Bali bods,” Ms Ryan said.

“We are hoping to train four or five times a week.”

The pair, who has been working and gymming together for five years, said finding a gym buddy had helped keep them on track, especially during the New Year’s period.

“Find a friend to keep you on track,” Ms Ryan said.

“If she says she’s going to the gym then I feel like I also need to go, and I think it’s vice versa,” Ms Howes said.

“At New Year’s the gym is always busy for the first three weeks, but then it dies down a bit.”

World Gym Toowoomba club manager Kayla Ferguson said 2020 would be a big year for the gym, with the Christmas period already bringing in the numbers.

“On Boxing Day this year we had more people in the gym than New Year’s Day in 2019, which was insane,” Ms Ferguson said.

“A lot of our existing members have come in the past few days because of Christmas, they want to come in and work off what they ate and drank.

“After this week, probably on the seventh, we will see quite a rise in gym numbers and then again when kids go back to school in February.”

Ms Ferguson said while there had always been a lot of talk about gym resolutions, guests’ fitness goals had been transforming.

“More people are concerned about their health, it’s not just about getting skinny, people are saying to us they want to feel better,” she said.

“We hope to see an increase this year, but we also want people to stick it out.

“We often see numbers start to taper off again in March and April, before rising again in winter.”

How do you make sure your 2020 resolutions have longevity? It’s all in the small goals, according to Ms Ferguson.

“It’s easy to make a resolution and it’s 10 times harder to stick to it,” she said.

“Motivation post-New Year’s resolution, when you start to feel yourself slacking off, is make little goals.

“If you were able to come three times a week during holidays, try to come two times a week when you’re back at work.

“And ask us for help. A lot of people feel scared to ask for help, but we want to know. We can’t fix what we don’t know.”
