TOOWOOMBA deputy mayor Carol Taylor said her husband remained in a critical condition days after being bitten by an Eastern Brown snake at a Vale View property.

Roger Taylor had been shifting bird netting at the family home on Friday evening when he was bitten by the snake.

Unaware of the bite, Mr Taylor then travelled into town for a friend’s event, where he later collapsed.

He was rushed to Toowoomba Hospital and then flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, where he underwent surgery.

For now, Mr Taylor’s family continues their bedside vigil.

“There’s been no change from yesterday, he’s still in a coma,” Mrs Taylor said.

“Now it’s just a waiting game and we’re struggling.

“But we are all here and we are strengthened from the support of everybody. So we will take it as it comes.”

Mrs Taylor said she was grateful for the work of the emergency response team working on Friday night.

“We had ambulance teams help pick him up and, alongside the medical staff, they did an amazing job,” she said.

Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Paul Antonio issued a statement yesterday afternoon, saying the council had been shocked by the news.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Roger, his wife Carol, and their extended family as they deal with a difficult and unexpected situation,” Mayor Antonio said.

“I am saddened to hear the news. Roger is a fine gentleman who has very ably assisted his wife through her extensive local government career and in their family business.

“It is some comfort to know Roger is receiving excellent care and we pray that his condition improves in coming days.

“We all wish for him to make a complete recovery.”
